Mental health smart investment (Dallas Morning News)
Re: "Mental health cuts to hurt -- Slashed services may put more on streets or in jail, officials warn in seeking aid," Monday news story. As a retired therapist for the chronically mentally ill, I was appalled to hear about painful cuts in an already very meager mental health budget. I have seen that it is much more cost-effective to fund intensive prevention services, including frequent contact with therapists, nurses, and case managers, than to pay for expensive ER visits, hospitalizations and jail incarcerations. Budget cuts in preventive services also lead to increased suicides, homicides, and a great deal of unnecessary human suffering. _Donna Partee, Rockwall_ --Dallasnews.com/letters
